Due to its insane hardness, high natural oils and resistance to decay, it has been used for propeller shaft bearings on Naval ships and submarines, outperforming and outlasting other synthetic materials. Unfortunately it has been exploited to the brink of extinction. It also happens to be one of the slowest growing trees on earth taking more than 300 years to reach maturity, therefore it is now an endangered species.
A native of South America, Lignum Vitae measures an astonishing 4,390 lb/f on the Janka hardness scale, making it nearly 4X the hardness of Oak! Not only is Lignum Vitae legendary for being the heaviest and hardest wood in the world, the many medicinal uses harbored within the trees resin helped it earn the name “Wood of Life” translated to English. Due to the extreme rarity and high cost of this wood species, we only made 10 wallets. We don’t normally create collectors items, but this one feels like it belongs behind glass.
